Custom Hollywood Half Marathon Medals: Built Around What Race Committees Ask First

A custom Hollywood half marathon medal consists of a circular colour-block composition built for finishers: an outer ring of deep purple around the Hollywood sign on its green hillside, the downtown skyline below it and a pair of palms at the edges. Vistarts produces them from 100 pieces upward, with sampling completed in 7-10 days and the production run taking 15-20 days, shipped out of Shenzhen, Guangdong, China.

Committees tend to pick this layout for one structural reason: the picture is divided into independent colour zones rather than one continuous scene. Your skyline, your landmark, the banner lettering and the ribbon graphic each get their own zone and can be swapped individually, so a recurring series can be refreshed without commissioning fresh artwork from scratch.

What Organisers Ask Us Before Placing a Medal Order

Four questions come up in almost every medal enquiry we handle:

  • Will unit 3,000 look like unit 1? Colour drift across a long run is the most common complaint in road-race awards. One tooling set and one colour mix serve the entire order, with a sealed reference piece pulled aside and compared partway through and again at the end.
  • Our city is nowhere near California. Because each element occupies its own zone, your landmark can be substituted without touching the rest of the composition. Send a sketch or a photo and a preview of your version comes back the next working day.
  • Will the cartons clear customs before the gun goes off? A production window is held open from the day your deposit lands, and the shipment is routed by air with duty settled in advance, so the boxes are already in your venue's storeroom days ahead of the first starter.
  • What happens if the first preview misses? Redraws are part of the process, not a billable extra. Nothing is cut and no tooling is invoiced until you sign off on the artwork.

1️⃣ Product Description

This medal compresses the Hollywood hillside and the city spread below it into one circular field, and the composition is what sells it: a deep purple outer ring surrounds the artwork like a frame, with a thin polished metal rim closing the edge. Inside, the scene is built in three horizontal layers so the eye travels upward from water to skyline to sky. A teal water band anchors the lower left, cutting behind the palm trunks. Above it, the downtown Los Angeles skyline rises in a tight cluster of towers — a tall glazed blue tower on the left, then sandstone, white and blue mid-rises stepping across the centre. The palms themselves do the framing: two heavy trunks on the left, two to three on the right, their fronds breaking into the upper corners of the ring. Across the middle sits the strongest single element: a green hillside curving from edge to edge, carrying the white HOLLYWOOD lettering set at a slight upward angle, exactly as the sign reads on the ridge. Sky above runs from a warm orange horizon behind the buildings into clean blue with two white clouds. The banner below carries the event in three registers of scale — LOS ANGELES largest, HALF MARATHON subordinate beneath it, and 2024 seated inside a chevron that mirrors the angle of the hillside above. Every colour field is bounded by a raised metal line, so the palette reads as flat, deliberate blocks rather than a soft gradient photograph. It is carried by a green top loop onto a purple ribbon carrying white LA lettering.

2️⃣ Company Strength

A road race puts two clocks on a medal order, and they are not the same clock. The first is the tooling clock; the second is race weekend, which does not move for anyone. Our Shenzhen campus is built to absorb both at once: 10,000 sqm under one roof, five parallel production lines, more than 150 people on the floor, and twenty designers working in-house, with a yearly output of more than 600,000 finished medals and individual runs that have reached 50,000 units. Because the artwork preparation, the colour filling, the finishing and the ribbon assembly all sit inside the same building, there is no handover to a subcontractor in the middle of your schedule — which is where race-date slippage usually starts. What we guard hardest on a road-race order is not the design, it is sameness: a half marathon hands out thousands of medals that have to look identical in every finisher's photograph, so the entire run is cut from one tooling set, filled from one colour batch and checked against a sealed golden sample. Every order clears three gates — the raw body is measured, the colour is checked against your approved references, and the finished goods get a full inspection — and each batch is photographed and filed against your PO number so a reprint six months later matches the first run.

3️⃣ Why Choose Us

Race committees come back to us season after season for continuity rather than scale. Because the artwork is held as separate exchangeable zones, changing the year, the distance or a single sponsor panel does not mean paying for a new medal — that is the difference between a one-off purchase and a series you can plan around. Our studio works directly in English, so feedback on a mockup does not survive a round trip through a translator, and every quotation arrives as a 3D mockup you can forward to a committee or a sponsor before a single tooling charge is raised. On documentation, we would rather you verify than take our word: EN71, RoHS and SGS reports plus a California Prop 65 declaration come with the order and can be supplied before you place a deposit, so your committee or your sponsor can review them first. If a municipal permit or a sponsorship agreement needs supplier credentials, ask us for the current certificate set and we will send it for your own verification.

4️⃣ CTA

Your runners will train for months to reach that line on Hollywood Boulevard. Make it a keepsake they keep in sight rather than in a drawer. Send your race name, your city and your quantity, and within one working day you will have a free 3D rendering of your own medal plus a complete quotation with tooling, ribbon and freight broken out. Nothing is cut and nothing is charged until you approve that rendering, and if it is not right yet, we keep revising rather than pushing you toward a production slot.

FAQ:

Q1: How small can our first medal order be?

A: The floor is 100 pieces for a single design. Because the artwork zones are cut once and then stored, a debut event can open at that floor and return for 3,000 the next season using the same tooling — no fresh setup cost.
Q2: Can our own landmark take the place of the Hollywood sign and the skyline?

A: Yes. Those elements sit in their own zones within the composition rather than one flattened picture, so swapping in your own landmark does not disturb the rest of the artwork. Send your landmark artwork in any usable format and we will show you a preview before the die is cut.
Q3: This is an annual event. Does the medal need to carry a year at all?

A: Worth settling before tooling, because it is difficult to reverse. The 2024 occupies its own banner zone, so it can be swapped for a single edition or dropped altogether. For anything you expect to run three years or longer we usually advise dropping it — a year-stamped die cannot be carried into the next edition without a tooling change.
Q4: Colour drift is our biggest worry. How do you keep several thousand units identical?

A: Sameness is a process problem, not a lucky one. The order is filled from a single colour mix drawn at the start, and every batch is checked against a retained reference piece — taken from the first units off the line — before it is packed. Nothing leaves the floor unrecorded: every batch of finished units gets photographed and logged against your order reference.
Q5: What is the turnaround, and can you commit to our race weekend?

A: A sample set is turned around in 7-10 days, with a colour swatch sent out for sign-off; the main run then takes 15-20 days from artwork approval. When we accept a race date, your slot is reserved from the moment the deposit clears and the shipment travels by air on a delivered-duty basis, so the cartons land 3-5 days before race morning, cleared and ready to hand out. A compressed build of 12 working days is possible if you need it.
Q6: Which ribbon widths and attachment formats can we order?

A: Three formats are standard:
• 1.5 inch is the width most road races choose; 1 inch and 2 inch are also available.
• Flat, V-neck and double-layer constructions are all offered, each carrying your own artwork, never a stock pattern.
• Every ribbon carries a breakaway clasp, so it gives way under load rather than pulling on a runner's neck.
Q7: What material paperwork accompanies the order?

A: EN71 and RoHS reports, an SGS test summary and a Prop 65 declaration travel with every shipment, and any of them can be sent for review before your deposit is placed — useful when a committee or a sponsor needs the paperwork first. Tell us which market you are distributing into and we will send the set that applies.
Q8: Is anything payable before we approve the artwork, and who holds the design rights?

A: A three-dimensional preview is with you within one working day, at no cost, together with a priced quotation that itemises the tooling, the ribbon and the freight separately. No tooling is charged and no production window is booked until you approve that preview, and redraws continue until it is right. The files and the tooling stay yours — we will not put another client's event on your artwork.
